Daily Astrological Forecast for February 2001
by Maya del Mar

Note: A VOC Moon period is when the Moon is making no further major planetary aspects before it changes signs. Moon and its aspects are strongly associated with our everyday behavior, and without those aspects to direct our course, we are left much more free to pursue our own ends in our own way. It is like you’re driving down the freeway and find the road signs removed for awhile. On the one hand, plans may go awry, you may miss your exit; on the other hand, inner work is greatly favored as those external "instructions" are reduced.

Times used are EST, because the overall influences for the United States are centered in Washington DC.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1. Moon is in First Quarter, in Taurus, and we spring into action setting the goals of the New Moon in motion. Taurus wants to ground Aquarius' ideas, to make them tangible. A freshly direct Saturn in Taurus will support those aims.

However, what ideas are being grounded now? Pisces and Sagittarius dominate today, and together they show an emphasis on spirituality and religion, perhaps fanaticism and moral righteousness. They are both very good at persuading others, and promoting illusions. They can also bring in fine spiritual guidance. A bit of time spent meditating today can help us all hear our own inner voices, and ask to be guided by the spirit of truth for the next month.

Pisces promotes vision, love, compassion, and imagination. It helps us flow with the zeitgeist, whatever that is at the moment, the maya, the present illusion. It also helps us to penetrate to the sense of the divine order which underlies everything.

Current mundane issues to which Pisces relates are all kinds of major cycles, from biological cycles to energy cycles, from the water cycle to climate cycles. Victims of oppression and injustice are under Pisces' purview, as is the state of Florida, with a Pisces Sun.

Chiron in Sagittarius dominates this day. It shows a wounding-healing of beliefs through a process of realignment as we look at Taurean reality. Chiron is now at the degree of the Galactic Center, and is ready to transmit special information for these times. Listen to your intuition.

All of this is centered around Aquarius, which focuses on energy and reform.

This is an active and productive day, and continues with an exciting evening. The challenge is to stay on the high road.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2. Anger and irritation are building, and we are feeling a need for action. However, action may be misguided until after Moon enters Gemini at 3:46 p.m. EST.

Venus has just entered Aries to give us a new, fresh look at our values. She will retrograde in Aries from March 8 until April 20, and remain in that sign until June 7. Instead of the usual 3 weeks of Venus transiting a sign, we begin today to experience 4 months of Venus in Aries. By the time of the June Mercury retrograde, Venus will have picked up many new values for us to mull over.

Aries is the warrior sign. Venus here appreciates challenges and aggression, and will encourage a battle mentality. Here she has a close sextile to Jupiter, and thus fights for the establishment, particularly the Republicans in the U.S.

Her boss is Mars, and Mars, now in Scorpio, is ready to go for the jugular.

In the course of her February Aries journey, Venus stimulates all of the eclipse points of the years 2000-2001. She will stimulate those same hot points three times: as she travels direct in February and March, retrograde in March and April, and direct again from April 20-June 7.

These are the Cancer-Capricorn eclipses which are changing the nature of the United States and the course of its history. Historically, they have tended to move the nation rightward, towards what appears as safety and security.

We in the U.S. ride the roller coaster this year, and we need all the retrogrades we can get to slow it down and check out its destination.

After Moon enters Gemini, energy moves along well, and connecting and communicating are favored. However, there may be confusion in both. Mercury is in Pisces, about to turn retrograde tomorrow night, and thus in unstable condition. And Mars is in the midst of three oppositions, tending to polarize people and issues.

Does the groundhog see his shadow today? Do we see ours?

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3. This is a powerful and polarized day, with a big energy release. Moon is in Gemini, showing lots of movement, action, and exchange of information. Moon opposes explosive Pluto, showing people and emotions running high on one side, and fighting deep control on the other. Pluto-Moon refers to the masses. Pluto is now transiting the U.S. Ascendant, and Gemini Moon is on the Descendant, making for passionate personal politics in the United States. The differences are settled by the Sun-Uranus conjunction, representing the changes now steamrolling through the nation.

Mars opposes Saturn today, at 25 degrees of Taurus and Scorpio, those most stubborn of signs. Neither one will give until forced to by crisis. Their last opposition was at the Eclipse of August 11, 1999, when there were several big earthquakes, including the Turkish disaster.

The Mars-Saturn conjunction which planted the seeds for this opposition occurred on April 15, 2000, when the NASDAQ plunged, and there were demonstrations in Washington against the IMF, the World Bank, and developing weapons for space. This is a turning point in respect to those and similar kinds of events.

And finally, Mercury turns retrograde tonight. For the next three weeks we can think about all that this long day has showed us, and continue to re-evaluate this information in the light of the month's subsequent events.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 4. Moon is VOC in Gemini for the entire day. Brainstorm, meditate, play with your mind, see what this newly retrograde Mercury digs up that you may have forgotten. Play like when you were a child, listen to old music, look at old photos, explore old haunts—and see what comes up. You'd probably like a companion, a "twin," or a "sibling" to share this day.

At 7:00 p.m. Moon enters Cancer, and feelings are definitely family-oriented. Nice vibes tonight. Enjoy love and companionship with someone you trust.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5. A peaceful day at home would be lovely, puttering around. Short of that, make your workplace a cozy home, and your co-workers a family. Nurturing yourself and others tops your list today.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6. Moon in Cancer has very constructive aspects this morning, and we do want to feather our nest. At 12:30 p.m. Moon goes VOC to loosen our moorings. At the same time Mercury returns to Aquarius, and consciousness comes alive again. We can use sensitive Cancer Moon to understand the emotional drives behind current events, and perhaps to see where we are headed. Spend some time alone this afternoon and allow the universe to speak with you.

At 7:21 p.m. Moon enters Leo, and it's time for a party. We'll enjoy some entertainment and good fellowship tonight.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7. Moon is in Leo for the next two days, with exciting aspects, and we have the enthusiasm and energy to handle big projects.

Full Moon at 20 Leo occurs tonight at 11:12 p.m. EST, and tomorrow morning at 2:12 a.m. PST. Full Moon is revelation time. Even the night is lit up clearly, and we can see our way through the dark.

Aquarius Sun is about having a just society where the dignity of each person is respected. The spotlight is on social organization. Leo Moon reminds us that each person has a need to shine in their own light, and that the Aquarian society is made up of individual egos. It is our time now to shine, each of us in our own way.

The Leo-Aquarius polarity is the humanistic axis, where people enjoy and appreciate one another, and gatherings during this time are always satisfying. Games can be fun for this combination.

Independence is the name of the game now. And move ahead with revolution. And truth or consequences. This Full Moon cozies right up to Uranus, who doesn't care what people think as he disrupts the status quo in pursuit of his ideals.

This Full Moon stirs up all the substantive issues which arose at the Taurus-Scorpio Full Moon of last Nov. 11. Now people's hearts and minds are aroused, and this is a season of action.

In November the Israeli-Palestine conflict escalated, a jury found against the Los Angeles Ramparts police, and the Florida court said no vote recounts.

The two-week meeting on global warming began in the Hague, and it was scuttled by the United States. The Asian Pacific Economic Council met in Brunei, snubbed the United States, and focused on the income gap between rich and poor.

Our chickens are coming home to roost, and it is likely that at this Full Moon many Americans, and perhaps others around the world, will protest injustice in a variety of forms.

Mars now in Scorpio has picked up independence from its square of Uranus, and toughness from its opposition to Saturn, and will not be leashed. We have the wherewithal to do whatever we need to for liberation. Or to pursue our own ends, whatever they might be.

The Sabian Symbol for 20 Leo is

"ZUNI INDIANS PERFORM A RITUAL TO THE SUN. A return to the glorification of natural energies. Here we see humans returning to nature and glorifying the sun after a long crisis of "civilized" living in artificial cities. The natural human links consciously to the sources of all life on earth. And this means IDENTIFICATION THROUGH WORSHIP—and the sanctification of the creative power."

Leo represents the Sun, and the center of the creative power within each of us. This Full Moon provides just the energies to allow us to empower ourselves. And at the same time to realize that nature is our mother, our source of life. Perhaps the human-devised power goes off to bring us back to nature and to rely on ourselves.

Energy is especially concentrated in Mexico, Europe, western Africa, India and New Zealand. All the southern sea zones around the world are also very active.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8. We'll start early and go full speed until late today. Our nervous systems are on overdrive. Moon continues in dramatic Leo, and the fallout from the Full Moon is extensive. At 4:25 p.m. Moon goes VOC, and at 6:35 p.m. it enters Virgo. The excitement persists, and we may have trouble sleeping tonight. Make an effort to relax and drop all anxieties.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9. This is another high energy and significant day, with turning points in cycles. Virgo Moon keeps us aware and conscious. We may see life-changing discoveries in science and genetics. We may feel an edge of irritability or the desire to get into an argument, especially towards evening. Best use this restless energy to work on a project or solve a problem.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10. Our analytical powers are keen today. We can learn and put together new concepts, especially as they relate to our work, ambitions, or social role. At 3:18 p.m. Moon goes VOC, and at 6:46 p.m. it enters Libra, just in time for a pleasant social evening. This weekend is like an oasis of peace in the midst of a fast-moving month.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11. With Moon in Libra, we'll enjoy socializing and companionship. Morning is especially loving and harmonious. By evening we may want to be involved with heavier energy, such as watching an intense movie.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12. It's Abraham Lincoln's birthday, and the roller coaster is on the move again, perhaps refighting the Civil War. Morning is easy and communicative. Moon continues in Libra with pleasant aspects. At 12:31 p.m. Moon goes VOC. In the midst of this VOC moon, we have meetings of Rx Mercury, Sun, and Saturn, where we have a new consciousness of grounding and building our social ideals. However, things set in motion this afternoon will have surprising outcomes. The election may be reverberating, for Moon now at the end of Libra marks the location of that infamous Mercury Rx in Libra at election.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13. This is an intense and mystical day, great for artistic creation. Inner self needs attention now.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14. Last Quarter Moon occurs at 27 Scorpio at 10:23 tonight, after which Moon goes VOC. This is where we separate the wheat from the chaff, let go of the unnecessary and hold the kernels of wisdom to carry into the future. Consciousness may receive a jolt now as we make this next turn of the wheel.

This is a dynamic day. It carries on Monday's work, as well as referring to the struggles begun at the Battle of Seattle, and the action of Jan. 22. With Scorpio Moon we leave no stone unturned.

There is much conflict in today's energies. We will have to make some tough decisions as we turn the corner. This is not your lovey-dovey Valentine's Day.

We say goodbye to powerful Mars in Scorpio, who has been with us since the Christmas Eclipse. Mars in Scorpio can be like a steamroller, and the new Administration, with Mars prominent in the Inauguration chart, has used it that way.

Today Mars moves into Sagittarius where it is much less focused, more scattered, more devil-may-care than in Scorpio. We become more interested in the overall picture, and in adventure, than in getting to the heart of things. Mars now heads towards a conjunction with Pluto in mid-March, just as Pluto is powerfully stationery in the heavens.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15 and FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16. Moon is in Sagittarius, and we feel the excitement of this adventurous fire sign. Aspects are excellent, and the world is our oyster. Vision is clear, and the path ahead feels open to us. Intuition is strong on Thursday. We might receive some surprising news, or a situation from the past may suddenly appear. Friday is more serious, the kind of day when we try to solve the problems of the world. We would enjoy entertainment on both nights.

These days, and tomorrow, are perfect for a short trip, or a seminar.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17. Moon rolls merrily along in Sagittarius, giving us a chance to finish whatever business is on hand. At 2:22 p.m. it goes VOC, and our sense of purpose diminishes. At 3:59 p.m. Moon enters Capricorn, and the mood becomes more serious.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18. Sun enters Pisces this morning, and energy shifts radically into mutable mode. Mutables are flexible, malleable, and with a tendency to take their cues from others. Decisiveness and commitment are difficult for mutables.

We begin in grand style today with Mars in Sagittarius opposing Jupiter in Gemini. During the next few days, Sun in Pisces will square them both. These are all mutable signs. The fourth mutable is Virgo, the sign of George W. Bush's Mars. He will be feeling special pressure to act for the next few weeks, and it will be difficult for him to decide what to do as various agendas press in on him.

Mars and Jupiter together signify the warrior or the traveler. Here the warrior fights with words and ideas. This Sag-Gemini opposition is reminiscent of the defining aspect of the election, and it may set in motion a process which continues through mid-March. A philosophical approach and sense of humor are part of this bundle.

Do something—and enjoy it!

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 19. We start the work week with a terrific work day. Let ambition reign.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 20. Moon in Aquarius opens channels of discussion and political debate. Thoughts range far and wide today, and can engender action. The expansion process begun last Sunday continues, and will finish on FEBRUARY 22. What adventure are you dreaming up to embark on after the next New Moon? This is a day of friendship and expansive vision.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21. Moon continues through friendly Aquarius. We will want to share our flashes of brilliance, perhaps late into the night.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22. Moon is VOC in Aquarius for the entire day, which promises excitement. Our 6-day expansion process is complete tonight, with action, perhaps impulsive, perhaps extreme, perhaps overkill. It is definitely significant, for this is a dynamic turning point of the 2-year cycle begun with the Solar Eclipse on July 1, 2000, the eclipse preceding the birthday of the U.S., of George Bush, and of the Republican Convention.

Moon enters Pisces at 5:45 p.m., and we begin to prepare for the New Moon early tomorrow morning. This is a wakeful and perhaps anxious and apprehensive night.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23. New Moon at 5 Pisces occurs at 3:21 a.m. EST. This New Moon sets in motion the month when we fish. We fish for those visions, those images, those dreams, which will feed us for the next year—until fishing season rolls around again. Utilize all the channels to imagination during the coming month—reading, movies, music, all experiences with the arts, time spent in nature and in contemplation, in prayer and meditation. This is the month when we connect with divine inspiration. Images which we encounter now impress themselves deeply on our subconscious. We might want to be choosy about those images. They will fuel our foray back out into the world in Aries.

The big dynamic at this New Moon is the aggressive and expansive Mars-Jupiter duo of this last week. We have already had a preview of the major influence of the next month.

Mars is the star player, and Mars simply means energy. In Sagittarius the energy is abundant and erratic, casual and unpredictable. Whatever Mars' qualities, its strength at this time will be highly stimulating to our envisioning capacities for the next month. And to all other Piscean activities.

Such as climate, food, and energy cycles. Oil. Genetic technology as it applies to life cycles. Study and learning about our ancient past and far future. Chemistry and biology in general. Global warming.

Pisces, in fact, is very inclusive. The understanding of life—where it's come from, where it's going, where and what it is— and working with life processes are Piscean. As well as working with the unseen forces behind it all.

Jupiter in Gemini gives an expansive feeling to this time—the sky's the limit—as well as lots and lots of information. And Pisces does like information.

All of this energy and busyness can overload the nervous system, as well as be quite confusing. Take time every day to get off the merry-go-round, to just be alone and still, and commune with some loving and peaceful images.

We will want to get new projects off the ground now, and in some ways the timing is good. However, any new project launched at any time this year will have setbacks and corrections. Just be prepared for delays, whether you launch it now or later.

Moon's first aspect today is with Pluto: around midnight a jolt of power moves through us.

The Sabian Symbol for 5 Pisces is

"A CHURCH BAZAAR. The value of giving a spiritual or transcendent sanction to even the most commonplace interchanges between social persons and individual minds. This brings in the element of religious sanctions. The purpose of any organized religion is primarily to meet the need of giving a more permanent significance to interpersonal relationships within the framework of a particular way of life and culture. It justifies human behavior by blessing it with a divine Revelation of what is good and valuable. RITUALIZED BENEFICENCE."

Highlighted locations are Brazil, Argentina, Moscow, Israel, Australia, Japan and Beijing.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24. Start today opening your cosmic channel. Moon is in peaceful Pisces and it does not make distracting aspects. This day is yours for whatever inner or creative work you choose.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25. Moon is in gung ho Aries with lively, creative aspects. And Mercury turns direct at 16 Aquarius! It's time to move it out! Especially for all planets in your chart at 15-16 degrees, who are primed for action now. Family matters in particular are subject to shifting alliances as independence overtakes us.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26.
Moon continues in exciting Aries. Passions run high, and we communicate them openly. At the same time people are receptive to one another, and we can balance love and friendship with independence.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27. Moon is VOC in Aries for most of the day. We are spontaneous, with surprising results. This is appropriate energy for today's Mardi Gras. At 3:06 p.m. Moon enters Taurus, and our senses begin to perk. Enjoy a good dinner and start to think about what you want to do in the garden for the next couple of days and/or next Sunday.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28. Moon is in productive Taurus, and this day is harmonious and satisfying. Tonight, however, we may be pre-occupied and restless. Communication with others may encounter problems. Writing your ideas, and working with centering can be helpful.
