We have only one planet changing direction this month. Mercury turns direct on December 20 at 1:29 a.m. EST. In January, only Saturn will be traveling retrograde. When many planets are in direct motion, so are we. Life moves more quickly and easily. There is less of a tendency to reflect and review.

Thus Mercury turning direct on December 20 will set in motion a bullet train of events.

Furthermore, Mercury is traveling in the sign of Sagittarius, no slouch at moving into situations with buoyant confidence. This optimism does carry Sagittarius quickly into general luck and success.

We have not only speed as Mercury moves into gear, but we also have depth. Mercury represents our thinking and perception—the movement of our minds as well as our bodies. And this Sagittarian retrograde journey is guided by Pluto, God of the Underworld. During the days from November 19, 2004 until January 6, 2005, we enter new mental realms which transform the way in which we view the world.

Sagittarius relates to our worldview, our philosophy, and our beliefs. It is associated with law, politics, religion, and fraternal groups. Pluto’s influence indicates that all of these areas are undergoing transformation.

Pluto’s evolutionary work in Sagittarius is a 12-year process. However, the importance of this current period is that our consciousness is directly affected. We are now aware of these deep changes in a new way. And as our thoughts change, our behavior will change.

Pluto is the Transformer. This is the only time during Pluto’s 12 years in Sagittarius that it will have the grip on Mercury that it does in December 2004. (And it will be another 250 years until Pluto is again traveling through Sagittarius.)

We are partaking of an unparalleled opportunity to really think about our religious and political philosophies, and to revise them. Again, the specific time frame is November 19-January 6.

Aspects now increase idealism, so that we can incorporate our higher selves into this process.

We can begin now to change the world for the better. The Winter Solstice which sets the foundation for 2005 is part of this Pluto-Mercury renovative stream—in fact, Solstice opens the curtain on both Mercury’s regeneration, and the New Year.

We can begin by changing ourselves for the better, a natural shift as we move into a new year. Sag’s main function is to inspire, so let us encourage inspiration within and without. (Crystal Pomeroy’s column is a great help in adding inspiration to our lives as we follow the lunar rhythms.)
